Al-Taj News – London police announced Sunday the arrest of five people on suspicion of planning a “terrorist act,” following a “major incident” that occurred overnight near a military base used by the US Air Force in western England.
In announcing the arrests, the Metropolitan Police said, “It can now be confirmed that counterterrorism police are leading an investigation into an incident that occurred overnight near RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire.”
For its part, Gloucestershire Police said in a statement that Army bomb disposal experts “are currently examining a number of vehicles” near RAF Fairford, and that nearby homes had been evacuated.
It added that a security cordon had been established, noting that the “major incident” had been contained.
A government spokesperson said that Prime Minister Andy Burnham was being kept updated on the latest developments.
